Character Name: Aquutaq
Gender: female
Pack: Loner (for now)
Rank: Loner (for now)
Breed: Qimmiq (Canadian Inuit Dog)
Age: 2
Appearance: Like many of her breed, Aquutaq is powerfully built, the better to haul loads through ice and snow. As a working dog, her strength lies in her sturdy musculature - she is by no means a prim or dainty canine, and she lacks the slender grace of less stocky breeds. She stands the merest smidgen higher than twenty-two inches at the shoulder, and with all her muscle weighs in at sixty-three pounds.
Most of her thick, fluffy coat is pure white, the sort that looks like a thick pillow formed of the brightest cloud. Overlaid over the white is a patterned gradient of black to gray, the sort typical of bred sled dogs. The black streaks down the top of her muzzle, forking before the nose, but leaves mirroring patches of white above her eyes in a mask-like pattern. Her scruff is especially thick - while it isn't the full lion-like mane a male might have, it is thick enough to provide her neck with a thick shield against questing fangs.
Although Aquutaq is clearly built for brawn, the dark chocolate brown of her eyes holds more than a glimmer of smarts. She knows more than just gee, haw, and mush, and it shows in her ever-aware bearing. Her ears are almost constantly erect and on the alert, only swiveling into lowered positions when body language requires it. Likewise, her gallantly feathered tail is most often curled up and over her back, though when she runs it streams behind her like a banner.
Personality: More than anything, Aquutaq can take care of herself. As long as there is food for the hunting, water for the drinking, and space to run, she can be quite happy on her own. That said, she is happiest when she can be part of a team. Her natural inclination is to follow a strong leader, though if none can be found she takes charge with barely a thought. She has a strong pack instinct - such that she will willingly jump to the defense of even the least among those she considers pack or family.
Her build has made her used to being taken seriously, but she isn't the biggest or baddest dog in the kennel, and she knows it. She picks her battles carefully - while she'll use her stature to bluff with a rumbling growl and a bit of flashed fang, she doesn't like to enter into a full-fledged fight unless she absolutely has to.
Aquutaq takes an almost perverse pleasure in cold weather - snow and ice are enough to make her giddy. She gleans almost as much joy from a good hunt, taking pride in her well-honed instincts.
Around other dogs, Aquutaq tends to be wary, even a bit stand-offish, at least until she gets to know them. First impressions mean a lot to her, but a good first impression wins you her goodwill for life, essentially. To those who have 'passed the test', as it were, she shows a more excitable nature - she likes to take joy in her life, and she celebrates with great fervor, whether by bounding about or just barking a happy tune. Oddly enough, the exceptions to both her wariness and her energetic side are puppies. She absolutely adores puppies, but tends to be extra cautious and gentle around them, as if worried she might break them.
History: A purebred pup, Aquutaq was born to be sold off, and as soon as she was weaned she was shipped away from her mother and littermates to be trained as a sled dog. She grew up into the traces, and for a brief while was part of an excellent sled racing team. Unfortunately, while she was new to the thrill of the sport, her master was not, and after only a few months of truly being able to use her training as she was meant to, Aquutaq's team retired.
She was an amiable enough dog, and so her aged team driver sent her off to keep his sister's children company. For a while the novelty intrigued her, but within a month she was bored out of her mind. The children found her a poor playmate, since they were far too young and slow to keep up with her in a race, and they were far too delicate for any games she wanted to play. She couldn't lay still and calm, and soon enough she was relegated to the yard, to serve more as guard dog than playmate. The yard was fine by her, since she liked the elements anyway, but she memorized every blade of grass, every nuance of scent, within a week.
It was about then that she discovered how loose the collar they'd fastened about her neck was, and how flimsy the weak board in the back fence was. She ran, and ran, until she'd put too much distance between herself and that boring place to go back on a whim. It took her a while to get reacquainted with the wild, and to learn for the first time how to live without two-legged assistance, but she did it. Somewhere along the way, she wound up here, and now she's looking to settle down... at least until she memorizes this patch of grass too.
RP example: Boring. Everything here was boring.
Aquutaq couldn't bring herself to think anything else. Every day, the two-leggers wandered out of the house, and into the house, often multiple times. They were never gone for long, and she never went with them, anymore.
She was sprawled in a bothersome summer heat that made her thick coat crawl off of her skin. The humans were wearing layers of their pseudo-fur to keep themselves warm, but even her thinner summer coat was too cloying for this.
Her eyes flicked to the side, seeing the shade that had traveled away and left her exposed to the golden heat beating down from the clear summer sky. Only her paws were bathed in its cool gray now - soon she would have to heave herself up and move, unless she wanted to boil.
She missed, more than anything, the wind dancing along her pelt, the steady beating of paws in tandem, the crunch of snow beneath her. She missed seeing new places, smelling new scents, anything but this dreary patch of heat and green and... boring.
Rising to her paws with a heavy huff of breath, she stretched, feeling the laxness of once-honed muscles coddled by this trap. As she wriggled her head, ducking absently to nip at an itch on her foreleg, she felt the collar slide up her neck.
Her ears perked up as they hadn't in weeks. That was... new. That was exciting.
That had possibilities.
It took her a blissful few minutes to discover that yes, her summer coat was much slimmer than her winter coat, and no, the two-leggers hadn't tightened the collar to compensate. The heat forgotten, she bounded farther than her tether had let her wander, sniffing corners of the yard she'd only seen before.
It was maybe an hour after she she started exploring the yard that she discovered the wobbly board, and only seconds after that when she nosed it aside and tentatively slid her head through.
One wiggle and two shakes later, the fence was behind her, and once again there was wind laughing along her sides.

Miscellaneous: Though the significance of the shiny piece of metal her two-legger got is lost on her, Aquutaq's last race netted a first place trophy.

OOC Name: Eriu - or Aquutaq
Do you have any pets? Not anymore. :/ I had a dog when I was little, but most recently I've had rabbits. Well, and fish, but I don't really count those... not much bonding and love going on there...
